Hendry County

Hendry County, the southernmost county in the United States that does not have an international border or an ocean coastline, offers natural beauty, a family-friendly environment and proximity to larger urban areas in the adjacent counties. Part of Florida’s heartland, the area is known for its sugar cane farms. Thanks to the Caloosahatchee River and Lake Okeechobee that run through it, Hendry County offers residents and visitors a bounty of opportunities for recreation and appreciating the outdoors. If you are looking to sell, buy or rent property in South Florida, a Hendry County Realtor such as Mato Realty can provide you with the personal assistance and unique insights that only those familiar with the region can furnish.

The History and Appeal of Hendry County

Indigenous peoples have lived in the area that is now Hendry County since 10,000 B.C.E., with Europeans arriving in the 16th century. French trader Pierre Denaud set up a trading post in what is now LaBelle in the early 1800s. Three years later, the military post of Fort Thompson was established to house soldiers who were fighting against the Seminole tribes. These were the first permanent settlements in what was to become Hendry County.

In 1881, the Atlantic and Gulf Coast and Okeechobee Land Company began draining the Everglades that had previously covered a majority of the land. This made it possible for additional settlements such as LaBelle to be planned and implemented. As the 20th century opened, fishermen began to build camps in what is now known as Clewiston. By executive order of President William Howard Taft, the Big Cypress Indian reservation was established in 1911. In 1923, Hendry County was established, separating from adjacent Lee County. In the ensuing years, improvements were made in building facilities and transportation, enabling residents to enjoy both the serenity of agricultural life and the cities of Fort Myers and West Palm Beach.
